Greece is an easy country to stay connected in. Mobile coverage is good in cities, towns and on the popular islands, and a travel eSIM gets you online the moment you land in Athens or on an island. Here's how to choose the right package and avoid the few spots where the signal drops.

How much data do you need in Greece?

It depends on your trip more than the number of nights. Use these as a starting point:

Trip style Typical daily use 7-day trip
City break: maps, messages, restaurant searches 300–500 MB 3–5 GB
Island hopping: maps, ferry tickets, lots of photos shared 500 MB–1 GB 5–10 GB
Road trip or remote work: navigation all day, hotspot for a laptop 1–2 GB 10–20 GB

Trip totals include a buffer of about 20% and are shown in our package sizes (1, 3, 5, 10 and 20 GB). Pick the lower size for lighter use and the higher one if you stream, share lots of photos or use a hotspot.

These are rough estimates, since video calls, social media and hotspot use make the biggest difference. If you're unsure, go one size up. Running out on an island is more annoying than having a little left over. Our data calculator guide helps you get a closer number.

Athens and the mainland

Coverage in Athens, Thessaloniki and along the main highways is fast and reliable. You'll use data mostly for:

  • Maps and public transport, especially the Athens metro and bus routes
  • Taxi apps, which are widely used in Athens
  • Restaurant and museum bookings, since popular sites like the Acropolis sell timed tickets online

Islands and ferries

On the well-known islands (Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Naxos, Paros) coverage is good in towns and at most beaches. Two things to plan for:

  • At sea, the signal fades. Between islands you'll often lose coverage for part of the crossing. Save your ferry tickets, port name and hotel address offline before boarding. A screenshot is enough.
  • Hilly and remote spots (small villages, hiking trails, quiet beaches) can have weak signal. Download the area in Google Maps before you head out.

When your phone is out at sea, keep your home SIM turned off. Ship networks aren't covered by roaming packages and can be very expensive. More in our roaming charges guide.

When to install your eSIM

Check the activation rule for the package you purchased. Validity may start at installation or at the first connection to a supported network. Follow that package’s instructions; do not assume every plan uses the same trigger.

  • Install it on the day you fly, either before boarding while you're still on Wi-Fi at home or at the airport, or right after landing on airport Wi-Fi.
  • Do not install a week early without checking the activation rule; installation-triggered packages would lose those days before your trip.

When you land, turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM, make sure it's selected for mobile data, and turn off your home SIM. Our iPhone and Android guides show exactly where.

Quick tips for Greece

  • Hotel Wi-Fi varies a lot, especially in small island guesthouses. Don't count on it for video calls or work.
  • Sharing with family? Check that your package supports hotspot, and add their usage to your estimate.
  • Crossing to another country (Turkey, Albania, Italy by ferry)? A Greece package covers Greece only. Check the coverage list, or choose a regional package that includes every country on your route.
  • Calls: VenterraSIM eSIMs are data-only. Use WhatsApp to message or call hotels and hosts. Many Greek businesses use it.

Before you fly: checklist

  • Greece eSIM bought, and the QR code or install link ready
  • Hotel address, ferry tickets and bookings saved offline
  • Google Maps offline area downloaded for the islands you'll visit
  • Plan to install on the day you fly
  • Home SIM's data roaming off

Ready? Choose your Greece eSIM and enjoy the trip.
