Receiving Calls and SMS Abroad with a Travel eSIM

Bank codes, important calls or just WhatsApp? Two practical setups for your trip, with the costs and limits to check before you fly.

A bank wants to send a login code. Your hotel calls your usual number. A family member needs to reach you urgently. Having working mobile internet does not automatically make those calls and SMS available.

A VenterraSIM travel eSIM supplies mobile data, not a phone number or ordinary calls and SMS. For those, you depend on your original mobile line and its carrier. Choose between the two setups below before leaving.

Option 1: You need regular calls or SMS

Keep your original SIM line on, but turn data roaming off on that line. Use the travel eSIM for mobile data. This separates internet use from the line receiving calls and messages.

Ask your home carrier whether roaming is enabled for the destination and what incoming calls, outgoing calls, SMS and voicemail cost. Disabling data roaming only addresses mobile data; it does not block those other charges. Do not assume receiving an SMS is free.

This is the practical choice if you expect bank codes or important calls. It still depends on your carrier having service at your destination; delivery is not guaranteed.

Option 2: You only need apps

Turn your original line off and use the travel eSIM for internet. An already working WhatsApp account can use that connection for messages and app calls. Ordinary calls and SMS to your original number will not arrive through the travel eSIM.

Tell people which app to use before the trip. Do not rely on this setup if a service only sends verification codes by SMS. We also do not promise that iMessage remains available on your phone number when its line is disabled; check your messaging settings and test before leaving.

Set the lines up separately

On a compatible dual-SIM phone, select the travel eSIM for mobile data and your original line for calls and SMS, if keeping it enabled. Disable automatic mobile-data switching so the phone does not switch data to your home line.

On iPhone, start in Settings › Cellular. On Pixel, start in Settings › Network & internet › SIMs. Names and available options differ by phone, OS version and carrier. Follow our iPhone or Android setup guide for the travel line.

Prepare for bank verification

Before leaving, check how your bank approves logins and payments abroad. If it offers app approval, an authenticator or recovery codes, set up the supported alternative while you can still sign in normally.

If an SMS fails to arrive, confirm that your original line is enabled and has network service, then contact the bank or carrier. Buying more travel data will not fix SMS delivery on a different line. Never share a verification code with anyone claiming to help.

Important calls and emergencies

For urgent calls from family, agree on both an app and a backup contact method. A working WhatsApp call is not a test of ordinary incoming calls.

Do not rely on a data-only travel eSIM or a messaging app as your only way to contact emergency services. Save the destination’s emergency numbers and your accommodation’s contact details offline, and check your phone and carrier’s emergency-calling guidance before departure.

Wi-Fi calling and voicemail

Wi-Fi Calling is a carrier feature, not a benefit supplied by the travel eSIM. Availability abroad, billing and SMS support vary. Confirm the terms before relying on it.

Voicemail can also involve charges while roaming. Ask your carrier about unanswered calls and forwarding, even if you do not plan to answer calls yourself.

Your preflight decision

Choose original line on, data roaming off if regular calls or SMS matter, after checking the carrier’s terms. Choose original line off, apps only if that meets your needs and verification is handled another way.
